A native Philadelphian, Marc Zumoff turned his passion for sports into a 44-year Emmy award-winning career in sports broadcasting – as a 76ers play-by-play announcer for 27 years as well as working the Olympics and stints at Turner Sports and NBC. A few words about his journey:
How it all got started
I believe we are each born with gifts. Whether or not we recognize these gifts, and then ultimately utilize them, is what personal and career development is all about. When I was 11 years old, I began doing play-by-play of games by turning down the sound of the TV and recording my commentary into a then, state-of-the-art cassette recorder. This act of combining an ability to speak extemporaneously with my love of sports was not part of some business or career plan, I simply did it for the joy of it. The fact that I was somehow able to parlay that joy into a lifelong vocation is something I will always be grateful for.
It's important to have the right mindset when presented with any one of a number of moments or opportunities throughout one’s life. I was a shy, awkward, late-bloomer. But, my abilities honed through doing games into a tape-recorder imbued me with an almost incongruent self-confidence. So whenever I was presented with a moment/opportunity/situation which called for action, I would unhesitatingly step forward with an unflagging confidence, what I simply call “belief in oneself.” I tell young people all the time, if you don’t believe in yourself, all of the talent, demo reels and connections in our very competitive business won’t be of much help.
Why I joined the deftly.vc community
Since I made a career out of “going to sporting events and getting paid for it,” having FUN has always been a prerequisite. My friendship with Arie and those who I have met in the deftly.vc community indicate that this experience will be rewarding and... FUN!
